In 1891 Philip Albert Randall (PAR) and his brother William purchased “Carbutt’s” in Vine Street – a firm which they knew as one of the customers of their upholstery factory in Wycombe. In 1891, the name was changed to “Randall’s Stores”.
PAR’s son Albert joined the family business after WWI. Bert, as he was known, was wounded while serving in the Royal Horse Artillery and was invalided home, though suffered no lasting injuries.
PAR died in 1936 but his son Bert had already taken charge of the store. During WWII, the shop had its own dramas. Bert’s elder son Alec, who had just qualified as a cabinet maker, fought at Monte Cassino – where he spent his 21st birthday – and in the North African desert. Bert’s younger son Norman was still at school, though he later served with the RAF after the war before joining the business.
The shop has continued to be family owned and run. The next generation took over when John, younger son of Alec, followed his father and uncle into the business. John was elected to Parliament as local MP in 1997 so Norman returned from retirement for a while. However, John is still actively involved, and his elder son works there as does his younger son when his studies allow.
Celebrating 125 years of trading this year and still family owned and run, Randalls still offers quality, courtesy and service that is often hard to find in today’s world.
